Tranquilizer [Clear Vinyl] (LP)

Oneohtrix Point Never

The dream of the 1990s internet is alive and flourishing in Oneohtrix Point Never's Tranquilizer . The album gets its lush, otherworldly, Myst™ sound from a '90s era archive of sample libraries Daniel Lopatin discovered on the Internet Archive before it was sadly deleted. New age-y synths, sampled instruments, and distant chimes fill distinctly of-their-time: dated but lovely, the sound of the moment that's now nowhere to be found. A blissful, curious, enjoyable album.

SABLE, fABLE (CD)

Bon Iver

Bon Iver is back with the mood-setting, idyllic SABLE, fABLE . The songs blend elements of rollicking country rock, lonesome folk, throwback electronic, upbeat '80s soft rock, glitchy chillwave and wistful indie rock into a sound that feels at once innovative and inviting. Bon Iver and producer Jim-E Stack do it all with aplomb, weaving flourishes that seem like uneasy bedfellows into an album that'll easily carry you away with its impeccable songcraft. Featuring appearances from Dijon, Flock of Dimes, and Danielle Haim, SABLE, fABLE is some of Bon Iver's best-to-date.

Father Mother Sister Brother [OST] [Amoeba Exclusive Pink In Clear Vinyl] (LP)

Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch teamed up with British and German singer-songwriter Anika to create the moody and magnetizing soundtrack to his latest, Father Mother Sister Brother . The duo met at the Sacred Bones label's 15th anniversary celebration in 2022; the result of that first encounter is this collaborative, experimental collection. Anika covered two tracks: Jackson Browne's "These Days" (à la Nico) and Dusty Springfield's "Spooky." The rest of the pieces are hushed, hazy instrumental works that are haunting, evocative, and lovely. It's a fantastic record.

London eight-piece caroline are back with another joyously unorthodox album. caroline 2 evolves the group's avant-garde take on folk, Midwestern emo, choral singing, and guitar experimentation into an album that sometimes feels collage-like in its sound layering and juxtapositions. It's a listening experience that's at once off-kilter and woozy, organic and warm. Caroline Polachek even teams up with caroline the band for the wistful and cinematic "Tell me I never knew that." You never know where caroline 2 is going to take you, and that's one of the album's greatest pleasures.

Originally released in 2005, the award-winning album and its chart-topping singles like “Ooh La La,” “Number 1,” and “Ride A White Horse" are dark, glossy, seductive, and shimmering. This 20th anniversary reissue of the contemporary electro pop classic features the original album plus B-sides, beloved as well as brand new remixes, previously unreleased live radio sessions, and a Blu-ray Audio 5.1 surround mix. Prepare to be dazzled in all new ways.

Horsegirl's Phonetics On and On is entrancing. The band uses folk-inflected melodies, the occasional motorik rhythm, and psych flourishes to create songs that are hypnotic and homespun. Gamelan, synths, and strings add to the enveloping, innovative atmosphere, while production by fellow traveler Cate Le Bon amps up the intensity. A driving, delirious record that takes Horsegirl in new directions while capitalizing on the elements that have made them a cult favorite.

Anamanaguchi

Anamanaguchi is back with Anyway , an ultra-analog album from the pioneering chip-tune indie rockers. Originally conceived as a record about rage, on their first studio album in half-a-decade, the band just found themselves having too much fun. Instead, they explore themes of boredom, loneliness, love, attraction, sadness, paranoia, and (yes) anger — often with a bit of humor and slice-of-life realism thrown in. Recorded on vintage gear with songwriter/guitarist Peter Berkman taking on the role of vocalist, the lively Anyway already feels like a classic indie rock album.

As Cameron gets immersed in Isaiah's on-the-edge, take-no-prisoners lifestyle, what initially appears to be tough-love mentoring from the veteran gives way to jaw-dropping psychological cruelty.

OCMS XMAS (CD)

Old Crow Medicine Show

OCMS XMAS is the first album of holiday tunes from Old Crow Medicine Show and of course they're doing it in their inimitable style. Country blues, zydeco, and good old-fashioned twangy country strings bring a joyful atmosphere and an evocative vibe to the album's eleven originals and two covers. The storytelling is intriguing, with tales of Krampus, a modern day nativity scene set in Steel Country, and a bootlegger spreading liquid cheer throughout the land. A rousing, captivating holiday album that truly lets the good times roll.

A Study Of Losses [Blue Vinyl] (LP)

Beirut is back with the beautiful, melancholic A Study of Losses . Commissioned by the Swedish circus Kompani Giraff and inspired by German author Judith Schalansky's book An Inventory of Losses , it's a richly textured, evocative, moving collection of songs. Zach Condon utilizes strings, a harpsichord, ukulele, horns, and electronic flourishes to add vivacity to these meditative, sometimes elegiac pieces. A Study of Losses feels warm and comforting in spite of its heavy themes, the type of album that will serve as a companion, revealing more and more depth with each listen.
