Mother (LP)

The Wandering Hearts

The maternal experience is the key thematic element to The Wandering Hearts' stunning new album, titled, (yes) Mother . The folk-meets-Americana melodies perfectly convey the earth-shaking change and confusion of life as a new mother. Growth isn't always easy but it is rewarding, opening up life and one's conception of self into multifaceted new directions: Mother does a wonderful job of capturing these complex moments, with all their challenges and luminosity. With their latest, the UK trio has crafted an album that's poignant, joyful, and deeply moving. There's much to connect with here, whether motherhood is an experience you relate to or not.

Searching For Solace (CD)

The Ghost Inside

California metalcore heavy-hitters The Ghost Inside return with their 6th album, Searching For Solace . Tackling personal, weighty subjects such as loss and mourning, mental health, and the harrowing time many of us went through during the COVID quarantine. Singer Jonathan Vigil recently told Kerrang , "I think we've levelled-up, elevated, and found a more mature sound for the band." From lead single "Earn It," to crushing anthems like "Death Grip" and "Wash It Away," The Ghost Inside pours out their heart and soul into a slab of chiseled metal(core).

Sleigher (CD)

Ben Folds

Sleigher is a gift to Ben Folds fans. It's the beloved singer-songwriter's first holiday collection...and it's a milieu that's perfectly suited to Folds' good-natured, mellifluous, cozy voice. These songs feel like a toasty fire to keep the wintry darkness at bay. Folds has spoken about the way Christmas frames the year, serving as a marker of time as we consider the loved ones whose chairs will be empty this year, the little kids who've grown into young adults, and the passages of life in all their bittersweet beauty. He does some unexpected, exquisite covers (no painfully trodden ground here) but mostly felt inspired to write new tracks, resplendent in their relatability, hope, and appreciation for the way the holidays make us take stock of what's really special in our day-to-day lives.

Like All Before You (CD)

The Voidz

Julian Casablancas continues to evolve his sound on the latest from The Voidz. Like All Before You blends moody post-punk with woozy new wave and retro futurist dance punk. Leaning into his experimental side, Casablancas has created a truly surprising and exciting album, with the songs morphing from New Agey synth soundscapes to Daft Punk-esque vocoder vocals to gloomy goth rock dirges. Like All Before You is dynamic and inventive, exhilarating and astonishing.

Will Anything Happen [Expanded Edition] (CD)

The Shop Assistants

Will Anything Happen , the sole release from Scottish indie darlings The Shop Assistants, got a new coat of paint, so to speak. First, they remastered the original 1986 album. Next, they piled on the extras, such as B-Sides and Demos, Studio Outtakes, and 11 live tracks from 1987. Time has aged this album like a fine malt, with their singular blend of indie pop with hues of punk, new wave, and rock with an ethereal, dream-poppy-Cocteau-Twinsy thread throughout. Perhaps something would have happened had The Shop Assistants stuck together, but instead we have the ahead-of-its time Will Anything Happen as their musical star gone supernova.

The Linguini Incident (Director's Cut) [1991] (BLU)

Richard Shepard

In this delightful romantic comedy, Rosanna Arquette plays an underpaid waitress at an obnoxiously hip New York restaurant named Dali. The new, mysterious, dangerously in-debt bartender, Monte (David Bowie), needs to marry someone by the end of the week…or else. They join forces to commit a robbery and solve their financial woes. However, things never go as planned.

Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Going (CD)

Shaboozey

Hot off his appearance on Beyonce's Cowboy Carter comes Shaboozey with his top-notch new album, Where I've Been, Isn't Where I'm Goin g. Shaboozey fuses classic country sounds with indie Americana, adds in a dash of hip-hop, and occasionally even some pop. In Shaboozey's hands, this modern melange feels natural, affecting, and utterly satisfying. This is an album with a capital "A," the type of front-to-back listening experience that creates a mood and tells a story that'll stick with you. "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" is a down-and-out anthem that's irresistible and infectious. "Anabelle" will break your heart and "My Fault" (featuring Noah Cyrus) will break it into even smaller pieces. You've got to hear this album: you'll be glad you did.

What A Relief (CD)

Katie Gavin

Warm, folksy, and wise, Katie Gavin's solo debut What a Relief sees heartbreak as an experience to be lived with and learned from. Gavin, the lead vocalist from MUNA, leans into a different sound here — namely the blend of '90s female-fronted alt-rock and radio country she describes as “Lilith Fair-core." With lyrics that combine fierce independence and courageous vulnerability, you'll hear echoes of indie icons like Ani DiFranco and Fiona Apple, with the freshness and singular perspective Gavin brings to the table. What a Relief does feel like a relief in many ways: this is the type of album that makes you feel like you'll get through your worst days and maybe even look back at them with something like gratitude in the years to come.

The Moon Is In The Wrong Place (CD)

Shannon & The Clams

The Moon Is in the Wrong Place isn't your "typical" Shannon & the Clams album. The band's lush, throwback style informs these songs but instead of full-throttle, technicolor rockers, the album is a thoughtful, deeply moving chronicle of grief and loss. The groove comes out in places, in others, stillness takes center stage. Written after the death of Shannon Shaw's fiancé, the album is beautiful, dreamlike, and affecting.

Some Of It Was True [Red Vinyl] (LP)

The Menzingers

Philadelphia punk legends and road warriors The Menzingers' seventh album, Some of it Was True , stands as their most urgent and energetic effort to date. Capturing their distinctive live energy within the confines of the studio, the sound is rich, raw, and complementary to the group's increasingly prismatic songwriting approach. The Menzingers seem to be kickstarting a new era in their already illustrious career by tapping into the energy that brought the band to life in the very beginning.

Ilion [Blackened Red Vinyl] (LP)

Slift

French heavy proggers Slift are back with their third masterpiece, Ilion . Opening the album with the epic, sprawling 11-minute title track, this is an album that has a story to tell, and with no track under 8 minutes, Slift allow these songs to slowly unfurl and breathe. Fans of Melvins, Tool, Mars Volta and Baroness will not want to miss one.

Trail Of Flowers (CD)

Sierra Ferrell

No exaggeration: Sierra Ferrell's Trail of Flowers is a masterpiece. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter writes captivating, fresh songs inspired by classic country, bluegrass, and folk. These are ramblin', rootsy tracks that chronicle the excitement and disappointment of life on the road, gently make fun of Ferrell's ability to drive a suitor mad, and take a tongue-in-cheek look at romantic despair at a dive bar. All of which is to say that — woo boy — Ferrell has a voice, both in terms of her dulcet tones and her ability to weave a tale. An eclectic, electrifying indie country album that's likely to top many end-of-the-year "best of" lists.
