Forward (CD)
The Swell Season
Amoeba Review
After a sixteen-year break, The Swell Season is back. Forward is the duo's fiercest, most defiant, and most urgent take on folk rock yet. Joined by the group's original lineup of Marja Gaynor (strings,) Bertrand Galen (strings) and Joseph Doyle (bass), plus percussionist Piero Perelli, the artistic interplay between Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová sparks with an incendiary beauty. Vocals sound at times haunted and delicate, at others, fiery and implacable. The melodies have a similar stirring quality: Just as you feel lulled by the gentle loveliness of the folksy sounds, an underlying fervor brings barely restrained intensity. Forward is fantastic.
