“A jump, fizzy piece of power-pop about wanting to get away from all the stressful shit that’s constantly surrounding you” ~Stereogum
Lock up your daughters, L.A. Exes has arrived! The refreshingly clever queer trio lends sixties sonics with a modern edge to bring you good vibes for dark times. Though their lyrics are chock full of vulnerability and biting wit, the Exes always bring the party. Opening track “Skinny Dipping” and “Temporary Goodbye” hang intricate Beatles-eque harmonies on a frame of jangly surf pop, while the more contemplative “West Keys” and “I Got Half a Mind” find the band negotiating the fine line between “I miss you” and “I hope you die.”
As bassist and one of L.A. Exes’ two lead singers, multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, and producer Sam Barbera isn’t afraid to go there. With a voice somewhere between a growl and a purr, Barbera’s hardcore punk roots lend a welcome edge to even the sweetest of love songs. Her electropop project BEGINNERS has over 65 million collective streams, she’s collaborated with Kygo, toured with Walk The Moon, and most recently, her voice can be heard in an Apple campaign.
If you own a television, you’ve likely heard Jenny Owen Youngs’ ethereal voice setting the tone for your favorite TV show (BoJack Horseman, Grey’s Anatomy, Weeds). When she’s not co-singing lead vocals and ripping guitar with the Exes, she’s writing songs with other artists (Panic! at the Disco’s smash hit “High Hopes,” Pitbull, Donna Missal) or touring with the likes of Regina Spektor, Against Me!, and Frank Turner. A natural history enthusiast from New Jersey, Youngs distills her thoughtful worldviews into wistful serenades that’ll make you long for a time you didn’t know you missed.
Blink and you’ll miss her, Los Angeles native Rachel White is always on the move. Bouncing from playing guitar in Panic! At The Disco to producing to amateur ornithology, her mile-a-minute mind has landed her in the engineering booths of Panic! At The Disco, 5SOS, and Weezer. Even as she’s playing lead guitar and singing backup, you can bet she’s thinking about whatever’s coming next. This is the queer, female supergroup you didn’t know you needed.
Get ready, ladies, they’re about to turn you.
