The Christmas Spirit (CD)
Johnny Cash
Amoeba Review

The Christmas Spirit is Johnny Cash’s seventeenth album, released by Columbia in 1963. Cash was on a success-fueled tear in the early 1960s, grinding out an average of three LPs a year, most of them themed. He had already done hymns, trains, work fables, Hank Williams, and the Grand Canyon, so Christmas was inevitable. He amiably handles various holiday standards, including “Silent Night” and “The Little Drummer Boy,” but he mostly relies on his own material, which is pretty impressive when you think about it; Tex Ritter’s “Here Was a Man” is also a strong selection. This is recommended if you have any sort of taste for well-done, Americana-dipped x-mas relief (think: John Fahey). Besides, Cash takes a swing at Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
