John Cameron Mitchell is a New York City based independent director, writer and actor, best known for the cult hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Mitchell's stage past led him to write and star in the 1998 off-Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, about a transsexual East German punk rock singer named Hedwig. Mitchell and his writing partner, Stephen Trask, showcased and developed Hedwig and the Angry Inch at various gigs and drag punk clubs preserving its rock-n-roll feel. Three years later, Mitchell made his directorial debut with the feature film adaptation of Hedwig, which earned Mitchell a Best Director award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival as well as a Golden Globe nomination.
Mitchell was also executive producer of the 2004 documentary Tarnation, about the life of Jonathan Caouette, which won Best Documentary from the National Society of Film Critics, the Independent Spirit Awards and the Gotham Awards. In 2005, Mitchell directed music videos for Bright Eyes' "First Day of My Life" and the Scissor Sisters' "Filthy/Gorgeous." Mitchell's next feature was the 2006 comedy-drama Shortbus. 2010, saw the release of Rabbit Hole, a drama which Mitchell directed, starring Nicole Kidman, Aaron Eckhart and Dianne Wiest.
Together with Shortbus producer Howard Gertler, Mitchell is producing an animated feature The Ruined Cast and developing for the screen Neil Gaiman's short story How to Talk to Girls at Parties. His latest film Nous York, starring Sienna Miller is currently in post-production and he is also developing a show for the HBO network.
