Claire Boucher, known as Grimes, is an electronic vocalist, producer and artist originally from Vancouver, British Columbia. After relocating to Montreal in 2006, she became involved with and influenced by its DIY culture. In her music, Grimes experiments with airy-synth sounds and dance beats blended together with her falsoetto voice to create her one-woman indie, electronic pop band.
A relative newcomer, Grimes already has four releases under her belt in just two years. Her debut album, Geidi Primes, was initially released on cassette, followed by Halfaxa, both of which came out in 2010 on Arbutus Records. In 2011, she released Darkbloom, a split 12” with D’eon and also her first attempt at producing. That same year in May, Grimes opened for Lykke Li on her North American Tour, reaching a whole new group of fans.
Grimes signed with 4AD who released Visions, her third full-length album, in February 2012. Visions, which also featured Boucher’s self-made cover art, was a notable success garnering favorable reviews from critics and named Best New Music by Pitchfork and Most Innovative Solo Performer by MTV O Music Awards. Ever the prolific artist, Grimes has collaborated with LA artist Blood Diamonds on a track called "Phone Sex" and again with Blood Diamonds, Kreayshawn, and Tragik under the name L$D. Grimes will have a very busy Summer and Fall, playing the festival circuit (Reading, Leeds, Pitchfork Music Festival, Isle of Wight) and touring Europe, Japan, and the US.
