Lady Sovereign, who dubbed herself the "biggest midget in the game," is an English rapper and the first woman to be signed to Def Jam Recordings.
Born in 1985 and standing 5'1", Lady Sovereign began rapping at 14. In 2003, she appeared in a film called
The Battle about a 16 year old high school dropout turned rapper and landed a few songs on its soundtrack. Those songs, along with several other songs she released online, eventually became her first album, the
Vertically Challenged EP (2005).
Jay-Z signed Lady Sovereign to Def Jam in 2005 after asking her for an on-the-spot freestyle. Def Jam released her first full-length album,
Public Warning, in 2006. Her satirical lyrics and fast style, including the success of her single "Love Me or Hate Me," led to tours with Gwen Stefani and The Streets.
"Love me or hate me, it's still an obsession. Love me or hate me, that is the question. If you love me, then thank you. If you hate me, then f*** you!"
In April 2009, Lady Sovereign released her second full-length album,
Jigsaw, on her own label, Midget Records.
