After years of driving her husband to succeed, ruthless social climber Joyce Ramsey has driven him away. Bette Davis headlines this decades-spanning drama, originally titled THE STORY OF A DIVORCE, notable for its exemplary acting and unblinking portrait of the traumatic effect of a divorce on a middle-aged woman. Also notable: director Curtis Bernhardt's innovative handling of the flashback sequences (including one that transforms the 42-year-old Davis into a ponytailed teen); Davis sharing the screen with one of her girlhood theater idols, Jane Cowl ("I was unbelieving that I was playing scenes with her. I was nervous," Davis wrote in MOTHER GODDAM); and Davis playing mother to a darling blonde charmer who happens to be la Bette's real-life daughter, B.D.
