Summer 2000 [Clear Pink Vinyl] (LP)

X-Cetra

You've probably never heard a leftfield, lo-fi bedroom pop extravaganza quite like X-Cetra's Summer 2000 before. Elementary school pals Jessica, Ayden, Janet, and Mary recorded this ultra DIY album twenty-five years ago, fusing trip-hop, dance pop, downbeat, and '90s R&B into a haunting, off-kilter, gently experimental record with some serious sleeper sleepover hits. The songs are dreamy and hypnotic, trippy and infused with a latent suburban ennui. Out on Numero, X-Cetra has a bit of a cult following and with this 25th anniversary edition, you'll understand why.

A Paradise In The Hold (CD)

Yazz Ahmed

The British-Bahraini trumpeter weaves a stunning tapestry on her latest album, the mystical A Paradise In The Hold . The album was thematically influenced by the tales of Bahraini pearl divers and jewel hunters, and inspired by the music of her ancestral home. A Paradise In The Hold is a lavish journey to faraway lands, superbly anchored by Ahmed’s flawless horn performance.

The Shape Of Punk To Come [Remastered] (LP)

Refused

Complacency is a creeping, crippling disease. It's a central theme that Refused drills in on their 1998 classic album, remastered in 2010 on vinyl, with moments that annihilate, rallying against society’s structures favoring conformity as the band feeds off their own raw energy.

The Bed I Made (LP)

The Softies

Yes, you heard right. There's a new album from beloved indie pop minimalists The Softies. The Bed I Made is lilting and tender, a softly beautiful and introspective exploration of grief and rebirth. The songs are quietly powerful, a testament to love, hope, and growth through challenges. The Bed I Made is an album to treasure, one you'll want to listen to closely, again and again. This album will remind you that nobody does it quite like The Softies.

Talker (LP)

Wilderado

Fans of lived-in, warm, and moody folk rock will dig Wilderado's Talker . The band has created a transportive moodpiece with this album, moving seamlessly from downcast but dreamy ballads like "Longstanding Misunderstanding" to driving, rootsy numbers like "Coming to Town." The melodies all seem tied together by an underlying chord of sadness, even on the more rollicking tracks — it's this depth that'll make these understated, incredible songs stick with you. On Talker , evocative country western guitars meet gorgeous folk harmonies to create a quietly powerful collection of songs.

Obsession [Pink Vinyl] (LP)

The Driver Era

Brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch have released their fourth studio album as The Driver Era, Obsession . It will unequivocally delight their avid fans of well-crafted pop/rock tunes with smooth vocals and catchy hooks. "The Weekend" is a frothy upbeat number suited to its title, while "Don't Walk Away" brightens romantic verses with a head-bopping chorus. Other highlights include "I'd Rather Die," a groovy, slightly funky gem, and "Don't Take The Night," which leans into electro-pop or disco-punk.

Pacific Highway Music (CD)

Skegss

With their entertaining choruses and sublime combination of surf and garage rock, Skegss have delivered an album that captures the scene just right: your garage door open, you facing the beach on a sweaty, lazy day when you have nothing to do. What a dream.

Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind [Blue Vinyl] (LP)

Kate Bollinger

Kate Bollinger's full-length debut is assured, distinctive, and enchanting. Songs From a Thousand Frames of Mind will remind listeners of the sophisticated, suave classic pop of yesteryear. Opener "What's This About (La La La La)" calls to mind the effortlessly cool milieu of '60s Brit girl pop and French yé-yé. Simmering intensity underlies the honeyed lounge atmospherics of "Sweet Devil." Songs is a total dream of an album and unlike anything else you'll hear this year. Get ready for your new sonic addiction.

Kantos [Purple Vinyl] (LP)

Kishi Bashi

Kishi Bashi are back with the ebullient, ecstatic Kantos . These high-energy songs are an eclectic blend of jazz, funk, and city pop that'll boost any mood. The compositions are kaleidoscopic and joyful, a party soundtrack for the end of the world. Drawing inspiration from the sci-fi cult classic Hyperion Cantos , philosopher Immanuel Kant, and a visit to the ancient ruins of Crete, Kantos has a lot of emotional depth beneath its dazzling, danceable melodies.

No Obligation (CD)

The Linda Lindas

The Linda Lindas prove once again that they are one of the coolest, most rock 'n' roll bands in music today. On No Obligation , the band serves up scathing punk and irresistible power pop, informed by riot grrrl, indie rock, new wave, post-punk, and garage. The Linda Lindas set the tone right out the gate with the title track, a blistering basement punk jam, before somehow seamlessly shifting to a gorgeous yet gritty, droll and catchy mode via "All in My Head." As the album progresses, the energy never stops, with the band joyfully experimenting (and succeeding) with genre after genre. No Obligation is a thoroughly enjoyable, full-speed-ahead odyssey through underground rock 'n' roll.

The Scholars (LP)

Car Seat Headrest

On their first album in five years, Car Seat Headrest pays tribute to the legends of the western canon, from Shakespeare to Mozart to David Bowie. The Scholars is bold and experimental, while delivering head-boppin' rock anthems that are just pure fun. The songs will keep you on your toes; in the course of the opening track alone, genre flourishes swim seamlessly from piano rock to prog to krautrock to country rock. Each track is its own imaginative world because yes...it's not just a concept album, but also a rock opera. Innovative, jubilant, and filled with surprises, The Scholars is a delight.

Iris Silver Mist [White Vinyl] (LP)

Jenny Hval

The inimitable Jenny Hval returns with the piercing, lovely Iris Silver Mist . Named after a fragrance by the French perfume house Serge Lutens, the album is a reflection of Hval's pandemic experience: no live music, no scent of smoke and sweat, a longing for human intimacy manifesting itself through a newly rediscovered passion for perfume. The resulting album is both sensual and ethereal. The songs run the gamut from post-punk meets trip-hop ("The artist is absent") to melancholy chamber pop ("Lay down") to experimental folk ("To be a rose"). Iris Silver Mist is an extraordinary album, a record imbued with longing, wonder, and fragile beauty.
