Horrible Occurrences (LP)

Advance Base

Horrible Occurrences is filled with sparse and shimmering lovely songs — and yes, they're all about those tragic, terrifying, desolate moments in life. As Advance Base, Owen Ashworth (Casiotone for the Painfully Alone) finds the very human episodes of love, connection, and perseverance amidst the scary stuff. The songs all chronicle happenings in the fictional town of Richmond, a sort of stand-in for the places in the past where traumas reside, whether those traumas are more on the quotidian side (meeting a guy who seems lovely, only to hear he's maybe NOT so lovely in "Rene Goodnight") or more on the "local legend" side (having to face an intruder in your home at night in "The Year I Lived in Richmond"). These tales are so imaginative, so heartfelt, so detailed that it's easy to feel yourself right there alongside the fictional narrators, which makes Horrible Occurrences an incredible moving, gripping, empathetic experience.

This anniversary double album reissue celebrates the hip-hop duo’s 2nd studio album, which was acclaimed for its further developments in production, creativity, and gritty sophistication. With clever bangers like “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)” feat. Zach de la Rocha and “Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1,” the album was frequently named a Best of 2014 and remains an urgent and explosive must-have for hip-hop fans.

Alligator Bites Never Heal [Translucent Hazel Vinyl] (LP)

The rapper’s third mixtape earned her three Grammy nominations for its quirky beats, clever lyrics, and incorporation of genres like jazz rap, EDM, and soul. “Boom Bap” is a highlight with its funny lyrics criticizing the supposed rules of the hip-hop genre. “Denial is a River” has a fun throwback vibe with equally witty rhymes, while “WAIT” is a smoother R&B-inflected number.

Small Changes (CD)

Michael Kiwanuka

Michael Kiwanuka makes music that feels timeless. With production assistance from Danger Mouse and Inflo and featuring bass legend Pino Palladino (D’Angelo, Beyoncé) and Jimmy Jam, Small Changes is a future classic. Soulful, grooved out, with searing guitar work, these tracks are effortlessly cool and incredibly affecting. "Floating Parade" is sublimely beautiful, with a cinematic '70s funk and soul vibe. "Lowdown" is brooding and brilliant, a melancholy gem shot through with a glimmer of hope. Small Changes is a must hear.

Manning Fireworks [Red Vinyl] (LP)

The much-buzzed about MJ Lenderman returns with some of the finest work of his brief yet dazzling career. Manning Fireworks is autumnal and essentially lonesome, a record that feels warm, gracious, and ever-so-slightly optimistic, even as Lenderman chronicles the unrepentant foibles and failures of his songs' characters. The music is twangy, fuzzed out, and gritty: it's the sound of epic yet angsty nights out where the lines blur between melancholic hedonism and letting the good times roll. Going nowhere fast has never sounded so good.

The Oh Hellos' Family Christmas Album: Volume II (CD)

The Oh Hellos

Indie folk-rock duo The Oh Hellos have released a new collection of Christmas songs to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their first holiday EP. Volume II offers six lovely tracks that evoke a pleasantly melancholy atmosphere. There are elegant covers of tracks like "Christmas Time Is Here (A Charlie Brown Christmas)," but the traditional Welsh tune "Gower Wassail" is the highlight here, luring listeners toward the fire with its medieval melody, before ending with a swelling, euphoric outro.

Kneecap

Northern Ireland's Kneecap are the kind of once-in-a-generation group that'll make you reimagine the possibilities for rap. On Fine Art , the trio cannonballs off the diving board of grime and 2-step, creating unpredictable, relentless tracks that juggle unhinged irreverence and laser-focused insights. The group members' flows accent each other nicely, the beats shift from simmering Beastie Boys'-esque minimalism to hands-in-the-air dance to moody, bass-heavy garage. Fine Art is a woozy and wonderful thrill ride. You've got to hear this one.

Wild God (CD)

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

The latest from Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds is as ecstatic, strange, and questing as life itself. Wild God runs the gamut from the rollicking and picaresque to the poignant and extraordinary. The album feels radical in its belief in beauty and transcendence after the darkest nights; the power of the band's earlier excursions into the murk and the mire still rumbles beneath these compositions, even as they showcase the surprising twists and turns of our time here on this mortal coil. Cave has said that "joy" was considered as a title for this album and while the phrase "Wild God" packs in more of the mystery and awe of the experience, joy is certainly an appropriate descriptor of the way you'll feel while listening.

The Bad Plus

The Bad Plus have returned with their 16th studio album, featuring new members Ben Monder on guitar and Chris Speed on saxophone. Their avant-garde instrumental compositions continue to thrill, as evidenced by the lovely album opener “Grid/Ocean” and the stirring “French Horns.” The crossover appeal of these dynamic tracks makes it easy to see why the group is acclaimed by rock critics as well as jazz and classical.

BETA (LP)

Peter Cat Recording Co.

Indian rock band Peter Cat Recording Co. deliver the psych rock goods on their new album BETA . Brimming with ‘60s and ‘70s grooves, these melodic tracks are helmed by Suryakant Sawhney’s smooth vocals, and tinged with bossa nova, psychedelia, and Indian folk pop. The opening track, “Flowers R. Blooming,” is a whimsical, experimental mashup of sounds, while “Foolmuse” could be a loungier Arctic Monkeys tune. Elsewhere, “Black and White” incorporates an unexpected disco beat on this eclectic, absorbing album.

The legendary Pixies are back with another excellent and intriguing new LP. The Night the Zombies Came is as imaginative and unexpected as its goofy title. The tracks incorporate a number of genre flourishes into the band's edgy, electrifying rock 'n' roll sound. Traces of beguiling British folk, moody murder ballads, gospel-like choruses, relentless punk rock, and twangy Spaghetti Western imbue the album with a scintillating darkness that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats. This is an album you won't be able to get enough of.
