John Fred is most known for penning the bubblegum hit “Judy In Disguise,” which was meant as a throwaway tune parodying The Beatles’ “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.” But while John Fred certainly had strong pop elements to his material, he was in fact a fantastic R&B singer and song-crafter, sounding similar to Lee Michaels and Van Morrison, particularly on tracks like “Down To The Boogaloo.” The Louisiana-born singer was in fact none too pleased with the bubblegum success of “Judy In Disguise,” and as is evident on this collection, his style was certainly varied and more geared towards serious rock ‘n’ roll. This collection gathers some of John Fred & His Playboy Band’s best material, and while “Judy In Disguise” is included as the opening track, the rest of the material is likely to surprise those only familiar with that one song.
