Action Adventure (LP)
DJ Shadow
Amoeba Review
DJ Shadow isn't playing around on Action Adventure...but it sure is an enjoyable listen. The legendary producer/songwriter wanted to get back to creating music for purely emotional, personal reasons, rather than showcasing any star powered headliners — thus the album is largely instrumental in the grand tradition of Endtroducing and The Private Press. The exception is "You Played Me," a throwback '80s R&B track with retro synths and rhythms and enough heartbreak to make the dance floor glisten with teardrops. The other tracks run the gamut of sonic moods, with opener "Ozone Scraper" setting the tone through sparkling textures, woozy melodies, and insistent percussion. Action Adventure is another gem from an artist who continues to innovate and create must hear music.
