Mdou Moctar continues to expand the horizons of the Tuareg music tradition with his new album, Afrique Victime, incorporating field recordings and other eclectic sounds into his '70s/'80s-inspired Saharan rock. “Chismiten” is an exciting album opener, quickly getting your feet moving with its busy rhythm and lively guitar. Moctar sings about history, religion, equal rights and also love in his sincere, sometimes scratchy tenor. “Tala Tannam” may be a gently grooving lullaby, but the epic title track is a blistering takedown of colonialist brutality in West Africa. The latter combines a strong melody with gritty guitar, laser-like drum sounds, abruptly picking up the speed two thirds in and breaking out into fierce guitar solos.
