Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/14/2010
For their fourth record, the Grifters signed with legendary indie label Sub Pop. 1996’s Ain’t My Lookout moved the band’s infamously sloppy and lo-fi sound into much tighter sonic territory through clearer production quality. That’s not to say this isn’t a noisy record, it is. But the band set aside some of their obvious love for tape hiss and wrote more direct, focused songs for their big label debut. Its also ups the psych quotient with some deliriously freaked out guitar work. Songs like “Parting Shot,” the hilarious “Boho/Alt” and “Last Man Alive” capture the bluesy Memphis swagger and blistering noise-rock of the band while adding melodic strength and straightforward pop hooks. While not squeaky radio-clean by any stretch, Ain’t My Lookout is the Grifters’ move away from 4-track recording. While that might alienate some hardcore lo-fi fans, it makes for a record of great rock and roll.
