Aisles EP (LP)
Angel Olsen
Amoeba Review
On her latest release, the Aisles EP, Angel Olsen decided to go for a more spontaneous, light-hearted approach. After all, what’s more fun that a short-but-sweet cover EP of ‘80s songs? That’s the question Olsen goes after on this enjoyable collection of curiosities. Of course, the answer’s typically Angel Olsen—as novel as it seems to hear the melancholic singer-songwriter tackle hits like “Safety Dance” and “Forever Young,” there’s definitely a level of moodiness, with familiar favorites given an icy, dark new life. The approach brings a whole different dimension to already gothic-tinged tracks like Billy Idol’s atmospheric “Eyes Without a Face.” Aisles is a pleasure to listen to, especially if your idea of pleasure correlates strongly with “haunted.”
