Amapiano Selections (CD)
Teno Afrika
Amoeba Review
Lutendo Raduvha AKA Teno Afrika makes his debut with Amapiano Selections, revealing his talent for that underground electronic sound from South Africa. Occasionally referencing the more well-known diBicardi genre, Amapiano blends house, jazz and Kwaito, and Afrika's brand tends to highlight instrumentation over vocals, except on "Chants of Africa." Basslines and mid-tempo percussion are prevalent here, augmented by syncopated keyboard and organ; "Smooth Criminal" breaks into unexpectedly melodic segments and keeps you guessing. This is both sophisticated and DIY-sounding dance music.
