Amatssou (CD)
Tinariwen
Amoeba Review
Saharan desert blues meets American country music on Tinariwen's latest, Amatssou. Here the venerable Malian band creates some of their most interesting, stirring work yet. By incorporating strings into their grooved out, hypnotic blues, the band conjures up down-home plucked rhythms, lyrical and pastoral passages, and rollicking choruses. The fusion of genres is a major lightbulb moment; it's remarkable how well they inform one another, how easily they blend to create evocative, moving country blues. There's a reason why Tinariwen are legends and Amatssou is sure to become a classic before long.
