Angels In Science Fiction [Black & White Vinyl] (LP)
St. Paul And The Broken Bones
Amoeba Review
Paul Janeway poured the anxiety and excitement of his impending fatherhood into his latest as St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Angels in Science Fiction. Written for his unborn daughter and produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price, Jason Isbell) at Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis, the album has that throwback soul feel with very modern lyrical preoccupations. "Lonely Love Song" feels like just that: sparse, forlorn, and emotionally powerful. "City Federal Building" is classic keep-your-head-up funk with a dangerous, dark edge. The soulful, sunshiney melody of "Sea Star" belies the desperation of its lyrics—it's a fascinating contrast that makes the song utterly unforgettable. Angels in Science Fiction is fantastic. It just might be one of the best albums of the year so far.
