Apocalypse Love (LP)
Black Lips
Amoeba Review
The Black Lips continue to push their sound into uncharted territory with the weird and wonderful Apocalypse Love. Album opener “No Rave,” with its snarling, distorted vocals and discordant melodies makes it clear we’re not in Kansas anymore; this is mutant disco or early ‘00s dance punk playing on the jukebox in Twin Peaks’ Black Lodge. “Lost Angel” adds more roadhouse in purgatory vibes to the proceedings, with a hazy, darkly hypnotic melody that feels like Roy Orbison jamming with Suicide. Apocalypse Love is a moody masterpiece filled with genre-warping surprises and vaguely unsettling delights.
