Arkhon (CD)
Zola Jesus
Amoeba Review
Zola Jesus’s Arkhon is a wonder. ZJ singer/songwriter/producer Nika Roza Danilova consistently creates gorgeously epic works of art, but Arkhon feels like that closing credits moment, when our protagonist has taken all the punches life can throw and emerges bruised, battered, and ultimately triumphant. Basically, it’s the cathartic record everyone needs right now. Danilova’s powerhouse vocals are steeped in pathos, tinged with transcendent beauty, with opener “Lost” serving as both a battle cry and an exhortation to everyone who feels like their lives have gone pear-shaped. Featuring Randall Dunn (Sunn O)))) on production duties and Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie, Fiona Apple) on drums, Arkhon is a dark dream of loss, power, and inner transformation.
