De La followed up the commercial failure – but critical success – of '96's Stakes Is High with an ambitious plan for a triple album, which became divided into 3 (intended) separate releases, intended to be released within a year. Mosaic Thump is the first in the planned AOI, or Art Official Intelligence trilogy, and featured guests like the Beastie Boys, Chaka Khan, and more. The trilogy didn't pan out, but Mosaic Thump rang in the new millennium in a big way, getting nominated for a Grammy along the way.
