As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again (CD)
The Decemberists
Amoeba Review
The Decemberists take more inspiration from 1967 than from 1927 on their latest. Psychedelic arrangements, boisterous horns, sunny '60s harmonies, and those beloved harmonies combine into As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again. The storytelling is captivating as ever: the twists and turns of "Oh No!" are real cliffhangers, scored by Southwestern melodies, lounge music rhythms, and golden age of Hollywood horns. Then there's lovely, tender "All I Want Is You," a track that feels like a classic already. The album ends with the cinematic nineteen-minute-long "Joan in the Garden," a track that moves from awe-inspiring instrumentals to volcanic rock 'n' roll riffs to evocative ambient. As It Ever Was might be some of the most imaginative, gripping work from the always innovative Decemberists.
