At The Moonbase [Blue Vinyl] (LP)
Slaughter Beach, Dog
Amoeba Review
Slaughter Beach, Dog’s fourth studio album, At the Moonbase, is a cozy, lived-affair featuring some of bandleader Jake Ewald’s finest work-to-date. The Philly-based ex-Modern Baseball co-frontman crafts his own unique spin on that well-loved indie rock sound, fusing stream-of-consciousness vocals with nods to ‘80s-style triumphant ballads, ‘90s style emo, and early ‘00s college rock. Ewald’s influences feel recognizable, yet the songwriting feels fresh and innovative. The experience of listening to At the Moonbase is like hanging out with an old friend; all the familiar tendencies add a sense of warmth while all the surprising twists and turns keep you engaged, interested, and appreciative.
