Smashing Pumpkins' ATUM is ambitious, intense, and admirable. Yes, this is a rock opera, in all its soaring, sprawling glory—the music segues naturally from genre to genre, pulling in elements of operatic rock, ambient, indie, metal, and grunge to the Pumpkins' sound. Conceived as a sequel of sorts to the band's iconic Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and the 2000 concept album Machina/The Machines of God, the tracks on ATUM were originally released in three separate "Acts." This new release combines all three acts into one epic, emotionally affecting release that proves the now-legends are still pushing the envelope.
