Back Home (LP)
Big Joanie
Amoeba Review
If you’ve ever longed for an album that’s influenced in equal parts by Stevie Nicks and Husker Du, then Big Joanie’s Back Home is for you. The London black feminist punk band brings nuance and intelligence to these tracks that range from the grunge-inspired “Happier Still” to the swirling, synth-driven “Sainted.” The band recorded with Margo Broom (Goat Girl, Fat White Family) at North London’s Hermitage Works Studio and while the ethos is DIY the finished product should make Big Joanie stars of the underground. It’s an eclectic album that traverses territory from brooding post-punk to propulsive dance punk, with elements of riot grrrl and college rock thrown in to spice up the mix.
