Angel Olsen’s Big Time is one of her best yet. As the album opens with “All the Good Times” and segues into the title track, wailing guitars and melancholy memories set the tone for the proceedings to come, Olsen seemingly channeling that late night AM radio, all alone in the world weariness of classic country stars like Patsy Cline. Towards the end of the album, “Through the Fires” feels (fittingly) like a slow burn meditation on life and loss, the shadows cut through with flashes of light. Recorded in Topanga Canyon as Olsen processed the experience of coming out to her parents in the days before their unexpected deaths, Big Time balances grief with a belief in the beauty of life and love.
