Folk artist Bedouine beats the sophomore slump with her elegant new release, Bird Songs of a Killjoy. Azniv Korkejian's low, silver-toned voice has a timeless feel to it, even as it obviously references the '60s Greenwich Village folk scene. Her arrangements vary from simple acoustics to lush orchestral swells, often with surprisingly lovely touches at the end. The gently roving love song, “Bird,” for example, features a darker, haunting outro while “Echo Park,” which calls to mind Joni Mitchell with its idiosyncratic phrasing, morphs into a sweet medley of dog barks and children's voices in an ode to Korkejian's L.A. neighborhood.
