Bleed Out (CD)
The Mountain Goats
Amoeba Review
For his latest release as The Mountain Goats, John Darnielle sets his sights on the topic of vengeance. The new album, Bleed Out, is the result of immersing himself in the comforting (??) world of ‘60s-‘80s era action flicks during the isolating pandemic winter of 2020. Darnielle considers the pull and the punishment of seeking vengeance, turning his characteristically brutal vulnerability on what seems like both a strange, and an oddly fitting, lyrical preoccupation. After all, this is a songwriter who’s not afraid to tear someone’s still-pumping heart out—just usually, it’s his own. (Or the listener’s!) As always, it’s an imaginative, absorbing, and intelligent collection of songs that’ll keep listeners coming back for an emotional and intellectual gut punch.
