Wildewoman (The New Recordings) (CD)

Lucius

Having recently signed with Fantasy Records, Lucius re-recorded their formative, fantastic 2013 album, Wildewoman . The New Recordings showcases the band at their lyrical, lovely best, with girl group harmonies over melodies that range from dazzling retro pop to cozy indie folk. Featuring guest vocals from Brandi Carlile, Marcus Mumford, and Devon Gilfillian.

Everything Sucks (CD)

Descendents

Punk rock icons The Descendents may have released Milo Goes to College in 1982, but after 1987's All , singer Milo Auckerman actually went to college for biochemistry. Everything Sucks marked his return to the band, who would then go dormant again until 2004. Returning with a more streamlined sound and glossier coat of paint, Everything Sucks was met with mixed reactions at the time, but has been well-embraced over the years, marking this as a '90s pop-punk classic.

Hippo Campus

On Flood , Hippo Campus gets vulnerable and introspective. The songwriting is as tight as ever, with undeniably catchy choruses, layered compositions, and thoughtful lyrics. The band had originally intended to release a very different album but had ultimately decided the songs were too slick, without enough soul. So, back to the lab they went, to take a long hard look at life's more challenging moments, compelled by the recent death of a close friend. Affecting and irresistible, Flood is what they came up with when the band decided to go internal and urgent, and it's a testament to their bravery as artists and their skill as songwriters.

Where We've Been, Where We Go From Here (LP)

Friko

Chicago indie rock band Friko makes a strong album debut with Where We've Been, Where We Go From Here . Opening track "Where We've Been" first calls to mind a melodic band like Travis before edging more toward early Radiohead, while "Crashing Through" ups the latter influence with warped distortion and crashing guitars. Singer/guitarist Niko Kapetan's impressive vocals are both powerful and vulnerable, especially on "Crimson To Chrome" where he wails and lets loose his vibrato. This is a band to watch.

Duality (CD)

Lindsey Stirling

The new album by violinist, songwriter, and dancer Lindsey Stirling is a fascinating melding of genres: classical, pop, and world music with electronic elements. The instrumental tracks on Duality are as lush and dramatic as an epic adventure film soundtrack. After kicking off with Middle Eastern flair on the dynamic “Evil Twin,” the album moves to the breathtakingly anthemic “Eye Of The Untold Her.” Another highlight, “Kintsugi,” is lovely and stirringly melancholy.

Heavy Lifting (CD)

Detroit proto-punk trailblazers return with their first album since 1971, Heavy Lifting . While it is the return of a version of the band, it will also prove to be their last, as founder and core member Wayne Kramer passed in 2024, after recording had concluded. While the band is represented primarily by Kramer, original drummer Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson played on two tracks before his passing, also in 2024. Joined by rock royalty like Slash, Vernon Reid, Tom Morello and legendary producer Bob Ezrin, the Motor City 5 hammer down a hard-rockin' bookend to their storied career.

What A Relief (CD)

Katie Gavin

Warm, folksy, and wise, Katie Gavin's solo debut What a Relief sees heartbreak as an experience to be lived with and learned from. Gavin, the lead vocalist from MUNA, leans into a different sound here — namely the blend of '90s female-fronted alt-rock and radio country she describes as “Lilith Fair-core." With lyrics that combine fierce independence and courageous vulnerability, you'll hear echoes of indie icons like Ani DiFranco and Fiona Apple, with the freshness and singular perspective Gavin brings to the table. What a Relief does feel like a relief in many ways: this is the type of album that makes you feel like you'll get through your worst days and maybe even look back at them with something like gratitude in the years to come.

Grim Iconic... (Sadistic Mantra) [Clear Vinyl] (LP)

J.R.C.G.

The second studio album by J.R.C.G. (Justin R. Cruz Gallego) is a heady brew of experimental noise-rock, punctuated by his Latin music and punk influences. "Dogear" is an excellent example of this with its Latin percussion set against distorted, shouted verses and droning guitars. "Liv" is an intriguing track with a mesmerizing synth line that segues into a barrage of various electronic sounds and vibrant global rhythms. "Cholla Beat" leans unexpectantly more toward grunge, giving the album a solidly eclectic feel.

Burnout (CD)

BoyWithUke

BoyWithUke's latest album is also planned as his last under the moniker. Burnout finds strength in vulnerability, as Charley Yang gets introspective and open on these genre-hopping, enjoyable songs. "Can You Feel It?" opens with plaintive keys, building a poignant, delicate mood before the percussion kicks in and the anxiety ramps up. "Ghost" is wistful and bittersweet, a love letter to a relationship gone by. Burnout is a beautiful, dynamic album with arrangements that surprise and delight and lyrics that feel oh-so-relatable.

Million Voices Whisper (LP)

Warren Haynes

Allman Brothers guitarist and Gov’t Mule founder Warren Haynes has released his first solo album since 2015. With plenty of blues and soul plus some feel-good jamming, Million Voices Whisper is an emotional, uplifting album. “Go Down Swinging” is a solidly catchy, positive track emphasized by horn blasts and Haynes’ strong, husky vocals. Elsewhere, the bluesy rocker “Day of Reckoning” is an affecting call to arms, reminding listeners of the power of the people.

But I'll Wait For You (CD)

Local Natives

Local Natives follow up 2023's Time Will Wait For No One with this new companion album, But I'll Wait For You . The last album before the departure of co-lead vocalist and founding member Kelcey Ayer, it offers characteristically poignant, melodic tracks like "Alpharetta." "April" builds on that vibe with a little psych-funk and some slinky dancefloor grooves. "Neon Memory" and "Camera Shy" stand out for their livelier beats, interesting melodies, and gentle dynamics.

Good Together (CD)

Lake Street Dive

The genre-crossing band Lake Street Dive has returned with their eighth studio album, Good Together . The album is rich with '70s rock/pop sounds, such as on the title track, which could be the theme song for an old TV show. "Get Around" is fun and funky, and "Seats At The Bar" throws in a little samba-inflected disco. "Party On The Roof" is a highlight with its satisfying groove and catchy chorus. This is a light and breezy set, helmed by Rachael Price's strong, melodious vocals.
