Blowout (CD)
John Carroll Kirby
Amoeba Review
Get ready for the lush, new throwback jazz meets exotica album from John Carroll Kirby! Blowout is guaranteed to increase the dopeness factor in any room in which it is played, thanks to its funky baselines, '70s-style woodwinds, and grooved out percussion. Written during a stay in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, Kirby was inspired by bird songs, sunset, the local people he met, and the music he heard. Those tropical influences are easy to pick up on throughout the album: it just feels like one of those easy breezy summer day albums, tinged with the slight sadness of the season's temporality. Blowout is stirring, evocative, and very, very cool.
