Close To Paradise (LP)
Patrick Watson
Amoeba Review
Patrick Watson's 2006 release Close to Paradise still has the power to stop listeners in their tracks. Watson's vocals move from amiable to unnerving, the music haunted and dreamily melancholy. Indeed, these tracks seem to come from a distant time, with Depression-era folk, electronic, gospel, and chamber pop all woven together. Sometimes you'll hear an album that conjures up whole movies in your mind, with characters and emotions you want to explore further -- Close to Paradise is such an album. You'll be glad for another chance to get lost in this carnival funhouse of an album.
