Amoeba Review

Johnny Otis’s essential rocking rhythm and blues album Cold Shot draws not only from his R&B roots but also from funk and soul styles making for one hot listen. From the foul- mouthed opening tune “The Signifyin’ Monkey” to his brilliant rendition of “C.C. Rider,” this album encompasses the blues at that moment in time, the late 1960s. To add to the undeniable flavor of this release there is endearing early lead guitar work by Otis’s son Shuggie Otis, who was just a teenager at the time. Considered by many to be Johnny Otis’s best, this album has a smoky feel about it that rocks the blues, funk, and soul: any fan of those genres should be delighted with it. It’s perfect summer listening.
