On Continue as a Guest, The New Pornographers return with another tightly-crafted indie pop album…but this time there’s something a little different. The band sounds as peppy and polished as ever, yet there’s almost a dark undercurrent to the sound that adds driving intensity and a sense of the unexpected. A.C. Newman’s goal with this outing was to add in some angular, “almost abrasive” elements to the tracks; while Newman and co. definitely aren’t heading into their goth phase, these new sounds do add a deeper emotional resonance to the band’s usual sweet vocal harmonies and buoyant melodies. An intriguing shift in sound for a band that always delivers.
