Avey Tare’s Cows on Hourglass Pond sounds like a distant, haunting dream. And like all the best dreams, it’s pretty strange — which should come as no surprise to fans of his work in Animal Collective or with Slasher Flicks. The sound is lush, richly textured, and deceptively simple (at least at times). The loveliness of “Saturdays (Again)” lingers on in the memory, bittersweet and addictive. “HORS_” is a sun-drenched excursion into psychedelic and the only acided-out tribute to equine life you really need this summer. Essential listening for those who like their music weird, wild, and wonderful.
