Crabby Appleton (CD)
Crabby Appleton
Amoeba Review

Crabby Appleton released their debut album in 1970 and enjoyed minor success with their single, “Go Back,” which peaked at number 36 on the Billboard charts. Don Gallucci produced the eponymous album and would later go on to produce The Stooges’ Funhouse. While this group was short lived, their debut is one of the more interesting albums of the time to come out as stylistically it touches on several genres in their budding forms. Singer/guitarist Michael Fennelly had previously worked with Curt Boettcher’s brilliant studio projects Millennium and Sagittarius, and had penned the gorgeous pop song “To Claudia On Thursday” for Millennium. Fennelly’s pop inclinations most certainly can be heard on this album, but they are accompanied with brazen rock instrumentation. “To All My Friends” sounds like something power-pop pioneers Badfinger would have penned. Along with this ear-pleasing pop/rock, there are also elements of progressive rock, particularly on the tracks “Peace By Peace” and “Hunger For Love,” which features jazzy rhythms and intricate organ parts. The album as a whole is a truly unique and engaging listen and is sure to please everyone from psychedelic fans to progressive rock/jazz fans.
