Cuttin' Grass - Vol. 2 (The Cowboy Arms Sessions) (CD)
Sturgill Simpson
Amoeba Review
Volume 2 of Sturgill Simpson's bluegrass project pulls from his albums A Sailor's Guide to Earth and High Top Mountain, as well as a couple songs from his previous band Sunday Valley - most notably the soulful yet lively "Jesus Boogie." Backed by the same talented players from Volume 1, Simpson delivers accomplished bluegrass versions of songs like "Brace for Impact (Live a Little)," adding new layers of emotion and energy. Rounding out the set on Vol. 2 (The Cowboy Arms Sessions) is the wistful "Hobo Cartoon," a previously unreleased track with lyrics by Merle Haggard, who sent them to Simpson before he died.
