Daffodils & Dirt (CD)
Sam Morton
Amoeba Review
Daffodils & Dirt is the lovely, dreamlike debut album from the multi-talented actor/director Samantha Morton and producer/artist Richard Russell (Everything Is Recorded). Working together under the Sam Morton moniker, the album puts a contemporary spin on '90s era trip-hop, garage, and downbeat. The BAFTA award-winning actor is obviously a force of nature on screen; music is new artistic territory for Morton and yet, listening to these tracks, it feels so natural, so fated. Rooted in the trauma and resilience of a childhood spent bouncing between foster homes and sleeping rough, there's a haunted yet transcendent quality to these enthralling, otherworldly songs. Daffodils & Dirt is an incredible, intriguing debut...and a strong contender for year-end "best" lists.
