Dance Fever (CD)
Florence + The Machine
Amoeba Review
Dance Fever, the latest from Florence + The Machine is an exquisite blend of anthemic, melancholic alt-pop and witchy electronic music. The album title draws inspiration from the Middle Ages social phenomenon in which groups of people literally could not stop dancing…but here Florence explores the different ways in which dance affects our emotional lives, with lyrics like “When I’m dancing, I’m free” (on “Free”) and trance-inducing melodies that serve as sonic exhortations to the dance floor (“My Love”). As Florence was in studio working on these tracks with Jack Antonoff in 2020, the pandemic hit, and the rest of the songs were birthed via remote collaborations with Antonoff and Dave Bailey of Glass Animals. It’s no wonder then, that the whole album feels driven by a volcanic desire to live, connect, and be free. Dance Fever is a transcendent album; the struggles are intense, but on the other side of dark days, bliss may be found.
