John Darnielle’s characteristic wry humor is present in the idiosyncratic song topics of The Mountain Goats’ new album Dark In Here, such as rats struggling to survive in Paris in the lively “Parisian Enclave” or the careful conversation in “To The Headless Horseman.” The title track is an ominous and brooding folk track about preparing to face an enemy in battle, that swells into an exciting outro, while "The Slow Parts on Death Metal Albums" is gently bluesy despite its title.
