Never one for restraint, The Weeknd pulls out all the stops on Dawn FM. This star-studded new album finds Abel Tesfaye moving past his “coolest nihilist at the nightclub” persona both lyrically and musically as he (or his sad party boy avatar) grapples with the struggles of healing and moving on. Musically, the album moves away from those gauzy, drugged out early dispatches, instead diving in headfirst to the sounds of classic ‘70s funk and soul, with all its handclaps, orchestral flourishes, and romantic gloss. Of course, this being a Weeknd joint, it’s still a party record on some levels and so the gang’s all here, with top-notch contributors like Tyler, the Creator, Lil Wayne, Jim Carrey, Quincy Jones, and Josh Sadie. Production duties are shared by EPs Max Martin, Oneohtrix Point Never, plus Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia, among others.
