Daydream (CD)
The Lovin' Spoonful
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 08/25/2010
The Lovin’ Spoonful’s sophomore release is one of their strongest and most memorable. It’s not only for their hit “Daydream” but also for the fact that the bulk of these songs are self-penned pop gems. “Didn’t Want To Have To Do It” is heartbreaking pop on par with any Brill Building-written tune a few years before; it’s a song you could easily envision any great soul-pop singer like Brook Benton or Maxine Brown scoring a hit with. “You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice” is blissful California sunshine pop via New York City and a gorgeous upbeat tune that gets stuck in your head. “Butchie’s Tune” sounds similar to early Buffalo Springfield. Daydream is perhaps the Spoonful’s strongest release and comes highly recommended. The 2002 reissue comes with six bonus tracks of alternate and instrumental versions.
