Easy Star's Thrillah (CD)
Easy Star All-Stars
Amoeba Review
Easy Star All-Stars have become masters of the dub cover album, famously covering albums by Pink Floyd (Dub Side of the Moon) as well as the Beatles and Radiohead. But Michael Jackson’s Thriller is another beast entirely, one whose highwrire pop thrills could easily have been flattened out by such an endeavor. Thankfully, the opposite is true — Thrillah brings new shading to the much-loved album and stays appropriately energetic throughout. “Baby Be Mine” is rendered as a lush soul-funk ode. “Thriller” is just as creepy, as the collective slows the pace but keeps the howls and delicious bassline intact. “Beat It’s” Eddie Van Halen riff is replaced by resplendent horns. Thrillah works because of the love Easy Star All-Stars obviously have for the originals, and their willingness to give careful consideration to each necessary change they make to the music.
