Emma Ruth Rundle’s Engine Of Hell is a minimalist album that packs a heavy emotional punch. Each song consists simply of voice accompanied by piano or acoustic guitar; the sparseness of the arrangements serves to highlight the richness of Rundle’s lyrical themes and her searing, searching vocals. Loss, grief, and catharsis are the order of the day here, and Rundle’s not turning away, even when things get challenging. The result is an album that, in spite of those sometimes heavy topics, sounds vividly full of life, in all its beauty and all its pain. Essential listening for anyone who could use a little release.
