Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/14/2010
Eureka, a seven song EP from 1995, ranks among the best efforts from overlooked ‘90s lo-fi indie rock band the Grifters. Hailing from Memphis, TN and racking up many Pavement comparisons in its day, the group never saw the popularity of that band. A more accurate musical comparison might be Guided By Voices, as the Grifters’ music draws from the same haphazard rock and roll abandon. Defined by poor recording and gleefully sloppy playing, the songs on Eureka capture everything that makes the Grifters great. Beginning with possibly the band’s best song, the EP alternates between beautiful slow tunes filled with dirty atmosphere and woozy twang and straightforward Stones-influenced rockers. The Grifters never seemed to get the credit its music deserved, but Eureka has aged incredibly well with time. Highly recommended.
