Expert In A Dying Field (CD)
The Beths
Amoeba Review
New Zealand’s The Beths return with another fantastic album of full-throttle power-pop. On Expert in a Dying Field, the band explore the aftermath of various types of relationships, the space that’s left when love is gone. (“Love is learned over time ‘til you’re an expert in a dying field,” sings vocalist/guitarist Elizabeth Stokes, on the title track.) The tracks move seamlessly from ‘90s inflected alterna-rock to scrappy indie pop to raucous punk—all with Stokes’ honey-sweet voice delving into the cynicism, exhaustion, and ultimately optimism faced when confronted with love that’s way past its expiration date. If your heartbreak needs to feel a little more upbeat, this is the album for you.
