Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs serve up good old-fashioned rock ’n’ roll on their spirited new album, External Combustion. The longtime Tom Petty guitarist and collaborator brings a defiantly independent sensibility to the proceedings; there’s an untouchably cool hard-rockin’ attitude to the album, even as Campbell and his band get into more heartfelt, serious moments of storytelling. It’s a good time through and through, with excellent contributions from Margo Price, and Benmont Tench, also of The Heartbreakers, on "Lightning Boogie." Campbell certainly understands the recipe for crafting a killer down-and-dirty rock album, and on External Combustion, he cooks up a winner.
