False Lankum (CD)
Lankum
Amoeba Review
Irish band Lankum adds an experimental bent to Gaelic folk on False Lankum, taking a genre that all too often borders on harmless and twee back to its roots as as a chronicle of lives spent on the knife's edge. Opener "Go Dig My Grave" begins as a traditional ballad before descending into a chilling, unforgettable exploration of grief, the searing instrumentation of the song's second half inspired by the practice of keening, which the band says was once considered to open "perilous channels of communication with the dead." Listen to this song and you'll believe you're this close to seeing beyond the veil. The band doesn't stay in gothic mode for the whole course of the album, though. "Newcastle" feels soothing, gentle, and cozy as a lullaby while "The New York Trader" is a timeless and haunting seafaring tale. An entrancing collection of songs that's an early pick for one of the year's best.
