First Step (CD)
Small Faces

Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 05/27/2010
The Faces were never huge in the US, but they were wired into the DNA of rock ‘n’ roll. They evolved from the Small Faces, which featured Ronnie Lane on bass guitar, Ian McLagan on keys, and Kenney Jones on drums. When they pillaged the then-innovative Jeff Beck Group for Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on guitar, well, you had the makings of a first-rate blues-rock combo. First Step is an excellent debut, originally released in March of 1970. Ron Wood handles much of the songwriting, although the band plows through a cover of Dylan’s "The Wicked Messenger” with aplomb.
