For Jimmy, Wes & Oliver (CD)
Christian McBride Big Band
Amoeba Review
Christian McBride and his big band tip their hats to three jazz greats on this new release: guitarist Wes Montgomery, organist Jimmy Smith, and arranger Oliver Nelson, who collaborated on The Dynamic Duo and Further Adventures of Jimmy and Wes in the 1960s. Playing the parts on the four relevant tracks are Joey DeFrancesco on Hammond organ and Mark Whitfield on guitar; the enjoyable "Down By The Riverside" is a swinging testament to their capabilities. The rest of the set consists of standards and originals written by the trio. The latter includes Whitfield's "Medgar Evers' Blues," a tribute to the civil rights activist.
